The Mental Health Team, together with the York Catholic Parent Involvement Committee, invite you to: Surviving the Holidays: The most wonderful stressful time of the year? presented by Pine River Institute’s Centre for Family Initiatives.

Everyone needs a break after the year we鈥檝e just had, yet for many of us, the holidays become another stressor, rather than a time for us to relax and enjoy time with family. Expectations of yourself and others can create tensions in the family, and poor sleep, diet, and lack of routine, can escalate the anxiety felt around the home.

Recognizing that things may look different this year, we can cultivate peace and wellness over the holidays so we can focus on what is really important, spending time with the people we love.

Public Information Session – Pope Francis CES Boundary Review

The following is an update on the recent 麻豆原创 Board of Trustees decision for the Pope Francis Boundary Review, and to provide families with information regarding next steps for registering students for the 2022/23 school year.

At the Regular Board Meeting of February 22, 2022 Trustees approved the following motions:

THAT OPTION 5 be approved as follows:

Pope Francis to include Area A, Area B and Area C (Option 1 Alignment)

St. Stephen to include Area A-1 and Area D AND (Option 1 Alignment)

Implementation of an Enrolment Cap at Pope Francis to reduce future enrolment, as detailed below:

        1. Effective immediately, Pope Francis will not accept any new registrations in SK-Grade 8.
        2. Any new students (SK-8) wishing to enroll from the Pope Francis attendance area will be redirected to St. Stephen, with transportation provided.
          1. Students who attended Pope Francis for the 2020/21 school year, from within the current attendance area, and who are currently enrolled in online learning at a 麻豆原创 designated 鈥榟ub鈥 school, will be eligible to transfer back to Pope Francis for the 2022/23 school year.
        3. Effective for the 2022/23 school year, new registrations (JK) at Pope Francis will be limited to 90 Junior Kindergarten students each year.
        4. For the 2022/23 school year, a cutoff date of March 11, 2022 is established for all JK registrations to be submitted.听 With confirmation to families by mid-April. For future school years, the cutoff date shall be March 1.
        5. Acceptances will be determined with the following priority and in the following order:
          1. Incoming JK students with existing siblings in the school from:
            1. Area A; then
            2. Area B; then
            3. Area C
          2. Incoming JK students without existing siblings in the school from:
            1. Area A; then
            2. Area B; then
            3. Area C
        6. All JK registrations will be sorted as per the groupings in item 5 above and admitted by priority, (i.e. JK registration from Area A, who have siblings in the school, would be considered first).听 If there are more registrations than available places, acceptance will be determined by lottery in order of priority as outlined in #5.
        7. When the total number of JK acceptances reaches 90, all remaining JK students will be redirected to St. Stephen CES with transportation.

THAT staff continue to lobby the Ministry of Education for a port-a-pak or a brick and mortar addition to the school; and

THAT staff report back to the Board of Trustees on an annual basis.

NEXT STEPS:

        • Families who wish to register their children for Junior Kindergarten for 2022/23 may continue to do so up to March 11, 2022. A cut-off date of March 11, 2022 has been established for all JK registrations to be submitted.听
        • Registrations received up to March 11 will be sorted and organized per #5 above.
        • A lottery will be held on April 4 to determine the 90 JK students who will be accepted at Pope Francis for the 2022/2023 school year and to establish a waiting list – using the order of priority outlined in #5 above.
          • Please review the lottery process for JK registrations in the attached document:听
        • Families will be notified by mid-April of acceptance into Pope Francis OR they will be provided with a waitlist number.
        • Students that have not been selected through the lottery process will be accepted at St. Stephen CES (with transportation provided). St. Stephen is located at 451 Napa Valley Avenue.
        • Any new students (SK-8) wishing to enroll from the Pope Francis attendance area will be redirected to St. Stephen CES, with transportation provided.

The purpose of the public information session is to:

  • Provide an overview of a proposed partnership opportunity with 麻豆原创 Continuing Education Department to use excess capacity at St. Joseph CES (Richmond Hill).
  • Provide a forum for families and the community to ask questions and provide feedback pertaining to the proposal.

Families can participate in the virtual public information session by accessing the presentation on the .


Why:听As part of the , the Board established a direction to explore community partnerships to utilize excess space in schools which supports the Board鈥檚 strategic commitment to effective use of resources. 听 At the , Trustees approved a motion for staff to conduct consultation with the school community regarding accommodating 麻豆原创 Continuing Education program within the school facility.

We welcome your input and we are interested in answering your questions. The virtual public information session will provide families with an opportunity to offer comments or share any thoughts about the potential opportunity of the Continuing Education programming at your school. Feast Day for the Immaculate Conception

What was the Immaculate Conception?

The Immaculate Conception refers to the special moment when the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, was conceived in her mother’s womb. This means that from the very beginning of her existence, Mary was preserved by God’s grace, making her completely pure and sinless.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on December 8th each year to honour this special event in the life of Mary. It is not to be confused with the conception of Jesus, which is celebrated on the Feast of the Annunciation. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception emphasizes the idea that Mary was chosen by God to be the vessel through which Jesus, the Son of God, would be born into the world.

Many individuals also use the feast Day of the Immaculate Conception as an opportunity for personal reflection and prayer. They may turn to Mary with their intentions, seeking her guidance, protection and help in their daily lives. Some may visit Marian shrines, where they offer candles, flowers and prayers as acts of devotion and thanksgiving.

As the day draws to a close, some communities may hold special evening prayer services, known as vigils, where people gather to pray, sing and meditate on Mary’s virtues and her significance in their spiritual journey.

The Immaculate Conception holds great significance for Catholics because it highlights Mary’s unique and extraordinary role in God’s plan of salvation. Her sinlessness is seen as a sign of her special relationship with God and her exceptional purity of heart. The Feast day is a time for Catholics to reflect on Mary’s holiness, her profound devotion to God, and her willingness to accept God’s call to become the mother of Jesus. It is also an opportunity for believers to seek Mary’s intercession and guidance in their own lives, as she is seen as a loving and caring mother who listens to the prayers and concerns of her children.

 

World Day for Migrants & Refugees

What is the World Day for Migrants and Refugees?

Since 1914, the Church has been recognizing the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) by praying for the many people who cannot return to their homelands. On this day, Pope Francis has sought to bring awareness to the several challenges that migrants and refugees face, as well as promote unity amongst all people.听

Jesus taught us: 鈥For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me鈥 (Mt 25:35-36). These words are a constant reminder to see the migrant not simply as a brother or sister in difficulty, but as Christ himself, who knocks at our door. Because of this, we are called to show respect for the dignity of migrants by accompanying and protecting them.

Catholics in the Greater Toronto Area have a long tradition of helping migrants and refugees. The first bishop of Toronto, Bishop Michael Power, cared for the sick Irish refugees who fled the Potato Famine and in 1847 he sadly died of Typhus as a result of his ministry to the sick. More recently, in 2015, through 鈥淧roject Hope,鈥 the faithful of the Archdiocese of Toronto raised $3.7 million to bring more than 100 families to Canada who were fleeing war and famine in the Middle East.

Pope Francis tells us that 鈥淭he synodal path that we have undertaken as a Church leads us to see in those who are most vulnerable 鈥 among whom are many migrants and refugees 鈥 special companions on our way, to be loved and cared for as brothers and sisters. Only by walking together will we be able to go far and reach the common goal of our journey鈥 (Pope Francis 2023).

Feast of St. Gregory the Great

Who was St. Gregory the Great?

St. Gregory the Great was a very notable figure in church History. He was born around 540 AD in Rome during a time that was plagued by wars, invasions and famine. St. Gregory’s story unfolds amidst these challenging circumstances.听

His father, Gordanius, was a wealthy senator and the Prefect of Rome, while also serving in the Church with the title of Reginarius. His mother, Silvia, came from a noble family and today is the patron saint of pregnant women. Gregory enjoyed books and learning very much and as a result became very educated for that time. What truly set him apart was his extraordinary generosity and empathy for the less fortunate.

Following the tragic loss of his father, Gregory selflessly converted the family estate in Rome into a monastery. With a great deal of enthusiasm, he established six Benedictine monasteries across his Sicilian estates.

In 590 AD, Gregory was named Pope by the clergy people of Rome, humbly referring to himself as the “servant of the servants of God.” His compassionate nature and exceptional leadership qualities earned him the title of “Gregory the Great.”

Gregory’s diplomatic skills, vast knowledge, talents and unwavering devotion to God proved invaluable in creating peace with other countries. He ensured the survival of Rome during times of famine, and fostered harmony within the Church. However, his vision extended far beyond Rome. Guided by a deep love for humanity, Pope Gregory began missionary efforts throughout Europe, sending groups of monks to share the teachings of faith with many new communities.

Pope Gregory became widely known for his unending commitment to helping the poor. He selflessly donated the wealth bestowed upon the Church by the generous citizens of Rome towards charitable causes. From financial assistance to donating land, no act of kindness was too small. He actively encouraged his staff and fellow priests to replicate this compassionate spirit, even urging the clergy to personally go out into the streets to care for the poor.

In his final years, Pope Gregory endured the physical challenges of arthritis but remained true to his faith. On March 12, 604, he departed from this world, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. It was no surprise that he was quickly canonized as a saint, for his love for God shone brilliantly in every aspect of his life.听

Feast of St. Teresa of Calcutta

Who was St. Teresa of Calcutta?

The remarkable woman we know as St. Mother Teresa began her life named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She was born on August 26, 1910, in North Macedonia and she was the youngest child in her family.听

She received her First Communion at the age of five and she was confirmed when she was seven. Her father died while she was only eight years old leaving her family with serious financial problems.

St. Teresa鈥檚 religious interests came from a Jesuit parish that was located near her home as a child.

When she 18 years old, she decided to become more involved in missionary work and leave her home to join the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as the Sisters of Loreto, in Ireland. She received the name Sister Mary Teresa after St. Therese of Lisieux.听

In 1929, she went on her first trip to India, where she worked in the city of Calcutta. In 1931, she made her First Profession of Vows and she was assigned a community in Calcutta where she taught at St. Mary’s School for girls.

Mother Teresa is one of our church鈥檚听 鈥渘ewest鈥 Saints, having been beatified by St. Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003.听

St. Mother Teresa was an inspiration and light for countless people thanks to her big heart and dedication to helping those in need. She always seemed to know what to say or do to encourage others to see the good in the world. Throughout her life, she tirelessly cared for the sick, homeless and abandoned. Her selfless devotion earned her worldwide recognition as a symbol of compassion and humanitarianism.

What is the International Day of Charity?
